Hello,
I’m an Austin resident and I have a curious question to ask. I was reading random twitter feeds regarding the French swim team’s win over the U.S. at the Olympics and I was surprised by the level of hatred. I’m an American living with my French boyfriend in Austin and he loves Texas (sort of obsessed with texan culture), has a lot of friends here, and doesn’t get any sort of negativity.
This is why I was surprised and mildly curious about where where “france hatred” derives from. I’m asking because I like your blog; I’m not singling you out, you weren’t unique in the “france sucks” twitter reactions. I know competition brings passion but I don’t think it comes to this same level with other countries.
Thanks for answering my questions.
Best,
Kristin

Hi Kristin –
Thanks for the comment. I was surprised to get the notification since I haven’t really updated the site in months. I was actually shocked as well for several reasons. First, the Australians and French were co-favorites in the 4x100m relay, not the Americans. Second, that so many people that are out of touch with society would take to twitter (hours after the event actually occurred) just to complain and spew ill-will towards other athletes, especially in a sport that they know nothing about.
I personally enjoyed visiting France and experiencing the culture. I think a lot of the distaste comes from individuals that haven’t traveled and are a bit narrow-minded with other cultures. It’s an unfortunate circumstance, and one that I don’t fully understand myself, but I don’t think it is unique to just Americans. I think it is a problem that exists throughout the world, with all cultures.
The irony in the entire situation: the majority of the ones on twitter claiming to always root against the French lack knowledge on American history. Without France’s support, the United States would not have found its independence in the 1770s.
