The Future of Journalism: The Daily Tar Heel

This is the Wednesday cover of The Daily Tar Heel created by Caitlyn Yaede, the print managing editor at UNC’s student-run newsroom. The image immediately resonated with me following Monday’s tragic shooting. It’s powerful. It’s emotional. It’s resilient.

While the United States continues to lose newspapers at a rate of two per week, student journalists are thriving. This summer, The Daily Northwestern broke a massive story about hazing in the university’s football program. Last fall, The Stanford Daily reported that the school president’s research was under investigation for scientific misconduct.

Even amid financial constraints and staff reductions, the next generation is finding a way to make a profound impact within our communities while delivering powerful storytelling and imagery.

“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” – Thomas Jefferson
